Yes,
you should have a thorough eye test or examination at least every
2 years. (Some opticians recommend every year.)
Your
optician will also examine your eyes for potential eye diseases. It
is important to have a regular examination, as some diseases can cause
loss of sight if not treated.

During
the eye test, your Optician will assess the degree of focussing errors
in your eyes. From the results of this test, he/she will prescribe
appropriate lenses for you.
The
optician will then complete a prescription form that describes precisely
the specification of the lenses needed to correct your eyes' focussing
errors. You are under no obligation to purchase spectacles with these
lenses from the optician that tests your eyesight. Under English law,
you may buy your spectacles from elsewhere.
You
will be required to pay for your prescription form, unless you meet
the conditions described below for free eye tests.

Yes,

glare while driving and using computer VDU screens. Please request
this when you order your spectacles from the Optical
Store.

We
suggest you try Intermediate Single Vision Lenses as these are similar
to reading spectacles but designed to be used at arms length. Your
optician will advise you on the correct prescription. We also suggest
you ask your employer about providing you with an eye test under current
Health and Safety Regulations.

The
Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 attempts
to address the adverse health risks to VDU users and require that
companies comply as follows:
-
All VDU user workstations must meet the minimum requirements of
the Regulations and BS/EU Regulations
- All
VDU user workstations are assessed in order to reduce the risks
of the potential adverse health effects
- The
user's work routine allows breaks or changes of activity * Eye tests
and remedial spectacles are provided, where prescribed, for users
- VDU
users are provided with adequate information and training on the
adverse health effects and how to avoid them.
The
Regulations require that VDU users are provided with eye tests and,
where prescribed, remedial spectacles at no cost to themselves. To
be a 'VDU user', the operator must use a VDU as an "integral part
of their job". (Some persons may not therefore qualify even if they
have a PC on their desk.)
VDU
users are entitled to a free eye test:
a) When taking up employment
b) Every two years as an existing user
c) If you experience visual difficulties which could be caused by
work on a VDU
The
employer has a duty to inform you of your rights under the Regulations.
The eye test will determine whether you need spectacles solely for
VDU work - in which case the company must comply and provide remedial
spectacles. However, most firms will only pay for basic spectacles
or up to a fixed limit.
A typical
situation might be someone who wears bifocal lens spectacles for general
every day distance, reading (or both). VDUs are normally located at
an 'intermediate distance' from they eyes and this can cause difficulties
for a bifocal wearer. The problem can be overcome with trifocals or
varifocals, which incorporate a correction for the middle distance.
Note
that under the Regulations "the employer need contribute only the
costs attributable to the requirements of the display screen work
involved" which means that the employer only pays for the difference
between the cost of the user's existing bifocals and the cost of the
trifocal or varifocal prescription.

Usage
of VDUs has been associated with symptoms related to posture and the
visual system. However, fears about the radiation effects on pregnant
users, epilepsy, formation of cataracts, etc, have been researched
and are unfounded.
VDU
users often blame eye discomfort or eyestrain on their screens, but
the screen itself cannot cause physical damage to the eyes nor aggravate
any existing eye damage.
However,
screens can trigger headaches, blurred vision etc, resulting from
a visual problem which was previously undetected or which had caused
no difficulties in other situations. Moreover, VDUs are normally located
at an 'intermediate distance' from they eyes and this can cause difficulties
for a bifocal wearer. The problem can be overcome with trifocals or
varifocals, which incorporate a correction for the middle distance.

Possibly.
Scientists have begun development and testing of a drug that they
hope will keep children's vision from deteriorating. An anti-myopia
pill could be just a few years away.
